Half cross stitch is one of the three basic tent stitches in needlepoint and is often the first stitch beginners learn. It creates a single diagonal stitch across one canvas intersection.
The biggest advantage of half cross stitch is that it uses the least amount of thread. Because the thread travels the shortest path on the back of the canvas, it is fast to stitch and economical with yarn. The tradeoff is durability. Half cross stitch has the lightest coverage on the back of the canvas, which means it is not the best choice for items that will see wear, such as pillows or stockings.
We like half cross stitch for decorative areas, small motifs, or pieces that will be framed rather than used.
