Needlepoint uses blunt tipped tapestry needles with eyes large enough to hold thicker fibers. Using the correct needle size makes stitching easier and helps protect both your thread and your canvas.
For 18 mesh canvas, we recommend a size 22 tapestry needle. For 13 mesh canvas, a size 20 tapestry needle works best. These are the needle sizes most commonly used in needlepoint and the sizes you will see referenced in stitch guides, kits, and classes.
The needle should pass smoothly through the canvas without stretching the holes or shredding your thread. If the needle feels tight or difficult to pull through, it is usually a sign that the needle is too large for your canvas or thread.
